Week 5: Reading and Tutorials

Week Five

Reading Week

During reading week me and my group had the task of brainstorming some new ideas for our creative project as our other ideas would be too difficult to execute well.  Me and my group discussed a few different ideas, we came up with ideas like a documentary focusing on enegram of personality which we all thought this would be difficult to accumulate enough content for a 4 minute documentary.
during this week i went home to do some extra research into an idea. i asked friends and family would they would find interesting in a documentary, i ended up doing some research into different generations like millennial's and generation Z.

I felt that doing a documentary on this particular generation could be an interesting idea as it would be people from this generation making a film about themselves but with an unbiased perspective.

The last source in my notes and research led me to investigate mobile dating apps like tinder and its place in my generation.  i thought that this was a good topic as it hadn't really been done before and would be an interesting topic as many people in my generation have experience with some form of social media app including dating apps.

Rabiger, M. (2004) Directing the Documentary, London: Focal Press. Ch.20: Camera Equipment and Shooting Procedure

  • Camcorder Features and controls: Documentary Video is often shot handheld, this is because of being able to have as little equipment on the move as possible.  the idea documentary camera is one with a viewfinder on the side and a body balance to sit on the operators shoulders.
  • Lens Characteristics: Wide angle zoom lenses simplify handheld camera work as the lens allows for a much larger amount of the visual space to seen in the frame while also enabling moving camera shots to appear steadier.
  • White Balancing and colour temperature:White balance is an electronic adjustment of colour rendition. so the colour white becomes a reproduced shade of white under particular light sources. different light sources have different colour temperatures ranging from warm(yellow- toned) to cold(blue-toned).
  • Camera support systems: Budget tripods and tilt heads are not effective and good quality equipment as your static shots will not be still but wobbly and unsteady. as mentioned before using a wide lens improves camera movement greatly.
  • Monitoring picture and sound: Things like Shooting logs are a great help when monitoring Picture and sound during filming.
