Week 8: Group Tutorials
Week Eight
Group Tutorials
This week we had group tutorials. We went in at our arranged meeting time and spoke to our tutor about our idea. Because we had changed our idea last minute our tutor told us to go and sit down as a group and discuss our ideas further and make sure we had plans and ideas that were set in stone so we could catch up to the rest of the class with the filming and editing side of things.
we sat down and brainstormed more ideas just in case we thought of something we would find to be easier however we ended up sticking with our Evolution of cinema just managed to do some more research on our topic collectively as group.
Some of our other ideas were good and interesting ideas but they would have been very difficult to create to a high standard in such a short space of time.

Own Research:
During some of my independant research i came across some more photographs that have inspired me some more about the direction we should go when filming. i felt that when thinking about the visual aspects of our film we should focus on the aethetic of abandoned buildings and capture how neglected and tired these old cinemas are, especially the Astoria.
I find this chilling image of an old projector in a abandoned and neglected cinema very atmospheric. i think that its important to try and get some visuals of decaying buildings and cinema interiors because its a real life depiction of the neglect towards cinema which is what we are trying to portray.
i find this photograph even more eerie and chilling than the last as you can almost see the life that used to exist and is now just echoing through an empty shell of a building. the colour in this photo juxtaposes the grey and mono-tonal theme and mood of the photograph which is an element and effect that would be really interesting, experimental and effective in our documentary.

Rabiger, M. (2004) Directing the Documentary, London: Focal Press. Ch.32 Editing: The Process of Refinement
- Editing to convey point of view: choices made in editing allow the audience to identify with either one of the characters or subjects on screen or with the slightly removed perspective of the invisible observer, who in film is often the narrator.
- Analogies to editing practices in music: two streams, visual and aural proceed independently yet are rhythmically related. for example this is like the cohesion between dance movements and music in a performance.
- Keeping the audience engaged: Creating juxtaposing images, themes and meanings that require interpretation and thought film is able to counterpoint antithetical ideas and moods with great economy.
